2205 Duplex Overview

• Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen enhanced duplex stainless steel that was developed to combat common corrosion problems encountered with the 300 series stainless steels. “Duplex” describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, like 304 stainless, nor purely ferritic, like 430 stainless. The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, 2205 contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. Often referred to as the work horse grade, 2205 is the most widely used grade in the duplex family of stainless steels.

• Aluminium pipe and aluminium tube are mostly used for various industrial or construction applications, but homeowners and auto manufacturers are also fast appreciating the use of aluminium pipe and aluminium tube, and they have adapted it for common household applications. Using aluminium tube or pipe can save you a lot of money as it is a lighter and cheaper alternative to steel or iron pipes. Aluminium tubing is available in a range of diameters from 2-inch to 12-inch; and they are available with their ends threaded for use with couplers. Here are some common applications for aluminium pipe and tube:
• You can apply aluminium tubing to borders around the garden beds. The material is also light enough to be used for creating fence for tomatoes, vine, and other climbing plants. The length of aluminium pipe can be connected as well as angled by binding cut tennis balls at the end. This keeps the structure solid, but lasts for the season.
• The CB radio and Ham radio fans use aluminium piping to form the structure to carry antennas from different residential roofs. The extended antennas improve the signal received by the device, and the pipes also help to endure the winds generated in various parts of the country.

• Aluminium tubing is manufactured through an extrusion process that is highly cost effective. Given the fact that there are no limitations for creating a die for anodized aluminium tube, the extrusion process leaves it up to the creativity to designers to make structures as per the project specifications.
• Aluminium tubes are used extensively in diverse industries such as the food processing, aerospace, medical equipment, mining, computer, and automotive industries. The metal pipes are also used in the carrying fluids and gases in various pneumatic and hydraulic applications.

Deriving the Duplex name from the presence of both Austenite and Ferrite in similar proportions, Duplex Stainless Steels combine excellent corrosion resistance with high strength. The typical mechanical properties would be double that of a single phase austenitic grade such as 316, while, for example, offering superior stress corrosion cracking resistance in chloride solutions.

Duplex stainless steels are extremely corrosion resistant, work hardenable alloys. Their microstructures consist of a mixture of austenite and ferrite phases. As a result, duplex stainless steels display properties characteristic of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. This combination of properties can mean some compromise when compared with pure austenitic and pure ferritic grades.

Duplex steels are also magnetic, a property that can be used to easily differentiate them from common austenitic grades of stainless.

S31803 / S32205 Properties Chemical Analysis (% max or range):

Corrosion Resistance:

• Duplex stainless steels are extremely corrosion resistant. They have high resistance to intergranular corrosion. Even in chloride and sulphide environments, duplex stainless steels exhibit very high resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Heat Resistance:

• The high chromium content of duplex stainless steels that protects against corrosion, causes embrittlement at temperatures over about 300°C.
• At low temperatures duplex stainless steels have better ductility than the ferritic and martensitic grades. Duplex grades can readily be used down to at least -50°C.

Fabrication:

• Fabrication of all stainless steels should be done only with tools dedicated to stainless steel materials. Tooling and work surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned before use. These precautions are necessary to avoid cross contamination of stainless steel by easily corroded metals that may discolour the surface of the fabricated product.

Machinability:

• Although machinable, the high strengths of duplex stainless steels makes machining difficult. As an example, machining of 2205 is around 20% slower than for 304.

Machining can be enhanced by using the following rules:

• Cutting edges must be kept sharp. Dull edges cause excess work hardening.
• Cuts should be light but deep enough to prevent work hardening by riding on the surface of the material.
• Chip breakers should be employed to assist in ensuring swarf remains clear of the work
• Low thermal conductivity of austenitic alloys results in heat concentrating at the cutting edges. This means coolants and lubricants are necessary and must be used in large quantities.

Heat Treatment:

• Duplex stainless steels cannot be hardened by heat treatment. They can however be work hardened.
• Solution treatment or annealing can be done by rapid cooling after heating to around 1100°C.

Weldability:

• Duplex stainless steels have good weldability. All standard welding processes can be used. They are not quite as easily welded as the austenitic grades but low thermal expansion in duplex grades reduces distortion and residual stresses after welding. The recommended filler material for 2205 stainless steel is 2209.

Characteristics 

• 6063 aluminum pipe has the same excellent corrosion resistance, strength, workability and weldability properties as 6061 aluminum pipe. Due to its finer grain structure, it produces better results when anodized, increasing its corrosion resistance.

• 6063 aluminum pipe is commonly found in irrigation systems, door & window frames, railings and furniture products that may be exposed to slightly corrosive environments.

• Grade 6063 Aluminium alloy readily suited to all conventional forms of welding. The recommended welding wires for this grade are 5183 alloy or 4043 alloy, if maximum electrical conductivity is required then 4043 alloy should be used.
• If both strength and conductivity are desired, then uses 5346 alloy and increase the size of the weld in order to compensate for the lower conductivity.

• 6063 aluminum pipe has the same excellent corrosion resistance, strength, workability and weldability properties as 6061 aluminum pipe. Due to its finer grain structure, it produces better results when anodized, increasing its corrosion resistance.

• 6063 aluminum pipe is commonly found in irrigation systems, door & window frames, railings and furniture products that may be exposed to slightly corrosive environments.
