• Not recommended for use in temperatures above the relevant tempering temperature, because of reduction in mechanical properties by over-tempering.

• Annealing - Full anneal - 850-900C, slow furnace cool to about 600C and then air cool. Sub-critical Annealing - 735-785C and slow furnace cool. Hardening - Heat to 1010-1065C, followed by quenching in warm oil or air. Oil quenching is necessary for heavy sections. Immediately temper at 150-370C to obtain a wide variety of hardness values and mechanical properties as indicated in the accompanying table. Tempering in the range 425-565C is to be avoided because of reduced impact resistance and corrosion resistance. Tempering in the range 590-675C results in lower hardness (the product become machinable) and high impact resistance.

• If welding is necessary pre-heat at 250C and follow welding with a full anneal. Grade 420 filler will give a high hardness weld (not as high as the 440C). Generally welding of 440C is not recommended due to its hardening capability which can lead to the formation cracks within or near the weld.

• In the annealed condition this grade is relatively easily machined; approximately the same as for high speed steel. If this grade is hardened machining becomes very difficult and probably impossible.

• Type 310/310S is readily fabricated by standard commercial procedures. In comparison to carbon steel, stainless steels are tougher and tend to work harden rapidly. Type 310/310S can be welded using all of the common welding processes.

310 stainless steel bar, otherwise called UNS S31000 and Grade 310, contains the accompanying essential components: .25% most extreme carbon, 2% greatest manganese, 1.5% greatest silicon, 24% to 26% chromium, 19% to 22% nickel, hints of sulfur and phosphorus, with the equalization being iron. Sort 310 is better in many situations than 304 or 309 because of its moderately high chromium and nickel content. It displays a mix of good quality and erosion resistance in temperatures up to 2100° F. Cool working will make 309 expansion in hardness and quality, and it doesn''t react to warmth treatment.

310 Stainless Steel is an austenitic stainless steel. 310 consolidates great weldability and malleability with awesome high temperature properties. Containing a high substance of Nickel and Chromium 310 has great consumption resistance, fantastic imperviousness to oxidation and quality up to 2100°F. The higher Chromium and Nickel make this a better stainless steel when thought about than 304 or 309.

15-5 precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steel sheet exhibits good transverse strength and fatigue resistance as well as good corrosion resistance. It is a cost-effective material, offering many of the same properties as more expensive high-nickel, non-ferrous alloys. Its high performance in high wear, corrosive environments make it a popular material for many industrial applications, especially for the aerospace, food service, metalworking, chemical and petrochemical industries.

While inherently strong and durable, 15-5 PH stainless steel can be further strengthened with a three-step heat-treatment process. The first step is to condition the metal using austenite. Step two is to allow the metal to cool until the austenite turns to martensite. The final step is to precipitation, Precipitation hardened stainless steel alloys exhibit improved strength, corrosion resistance, superior durability and performance under heat and stress.

For applications that require performance in high heat conditions, 15-5 PH can be heat treated after it has been precipitation hardened to provide improved resistance to stress corrosion cracking at high temperatures. In order to minimize distortion and stress in the finished product, fabrication is recommended after the metal has been heat treated.

The chemical composition of 15-5 PH is:

• Chromium: between 14.0 and 15.50 percent
• Nickel: between 3.50 and 5.50 percent
• Copper: between 2.50 and 4.50 percent
• Columbium plus Tantalum: between 0.15 and 0.45 percent
• Manganese: up to 1.00 percent
• Silicon: up to 1.00 percent
• Carbon: up to 0.07 percent
• Phosphorus: up to 0.04 percent
• Sulfur: up to 0.03 percent

• Hardenable stainless which may be tempered as high as 1350F to produce high impact toughness.
• Oxidation resistant through 1500F intermittently, 1200F continuously.

Alloys 309 and 309S are austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steels that are often used for higher temperature applications. Due to their high chromium and nickel content, Alloys 309 and 309S are highly corrosion resistant, have outstanding resistance to oxidation, and excellent heat resistance while providing good strength at room and elevated temperatures. The only significant difference between 309 and 309S is the carbon content. Alloy 309S has a much less carbon composition which minimizes carbide precipitation and improves weldability.

Vessco Overseas is known for supplying speciality metal alloys, particularly austenitic stainless steels like 310 in the form of plate, sheet, bar, pipe, pipe fittings, flanges, tube and weld wire. Stainless steel 310/310S is an austenitic heat resistant alloy having high resistance to oxidation under mildly cyclic conditions through 2000ºF.

This steel has a high nickel and chromium content that offers comparable corrosion resistance, high resistance to oxidation and retention of larger fraction of room temperature strength than the common austenitic alloys like Type 304. Stainless 310 is often used at cryogenic temperatures, with excellent toughness to -450°F, and low magnetic permeability.

• 317L has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of chemicals, especially in acidic chloride environments such as those encountered in pulp and paper mills. Increased levels of chromium, nickel and molybdenum compared to 316L stainless steel improve resistance to chloride pitting and general corrosion. Resistance increases with molybdenum alloy content. 317L is resistant to sulfuric acid concentrations up to 5 percent at temperatures as high as 120°F (49°C). At temperatures under 100°F (38°C) this alloy has excellent resistance to solutions of higher concentration. However, service tests are recommended to account for the affects of specific operating conditions that may affect corrosion behavior. In processes where condensation of sulfur-bearing gases occurs, 317L is much more resistant to attack at the point of condensation than conventional alloy 316. The acid concentration has a marked influence on the rate of attack in such environments and should be carefully determined by service tests.

• 904L is an austenitic stainless steel designed for moderate to high corrosion resistance. Its low carbon content improves cleanliness and weld strength.

• Utility scrubber assemblies, acid and fertilizer production equipment.

• Slow speeds and positive feeds will minimize this alloy's tendency to work harden and glaze. Use chip breakers where possible to overcome problems with long draggy chips.

• Most common fusion and resistance methods may be employed. For maximum corrosion resistance, it is recommended to use filler metals of equal or higher alloy content.

• Hot work should proceed after uniform heating to 2000-2200 F. Doe not work the material at less than 1800 F. Full annealing should follow any hot work to reattain maximum ductility and corrosion resistance.

• Although higher forces are required, 904L will respond in a similar fashion to other austenitic stainless steels like 304, 316 or 317. Most common operations can be successfully performed.
